Have your say on the future of adult social care

Your experiences and views could help shape the future of care in England.

The future of adult social care matters to all of us. Many people will draw on care and support at some point in their lives, whether because of age, disability, illness or another change in circumstances. Others may support a family member or friend as an unpaid carer, or work within the social care system.

That is why it is important that people have opportunities to share their experiences and say what they want adult social care to look like in the future.

The Big Conversation on Care

The Casey Commission has launched the Big Conversation on Care, giving people across England the opportunity to have their say on the future of adult social care.

The conversation is asking:

“When we are old or disabled, or have a serious illness, who should support us and how?”

Since the online conversation launched on 29 July, more than 350,000 votes have been cast and more than 6,000 proposals have been submitted.

People can put forward their own ideas, beginning with “we should…”, and respond to ideas submitted by others by agreeing, disagreeing or remaining neutral. The aim is to understand what people want and expect from care and support in the future, including where there is common ground and where people have different views.

There is still time to get involved

If you have experience of adult social care, either personally or through supporting someone else, this is an opportunity to share your views.

You do not need to be an expert in social care to take part.

You might have ideas about how care should be provided, what good support looks like, how people should be treated, or what needs to change to make sure people can live the lives they want.

New ideas can be submitted until 9 September 2026.

After 9 September, the online platform will move to a voting-only phase, giving people more time to respond to ideas that have already been submitted.

The first online phase of the Big Conversation closes on Wednesday 23 September 2026.

The conversation will then continue, with the online platform expected to reopen in the new year as the Casey Commission’s work develops.

Why people’s voices matter

At Healthwatch, we believe that people’s experiences should be at the heart of decisions about health and social care. Listening to people helps decision-makers understand what is working well, where people face difficulties and what could be improved. This is particularly important for people whose voices are not always heard. The Big Conversation is also seeking to hear from people who draw on care and support, unpaid carers, the adult social care workforce and communities across England. The online conversation is just one part of the wider engagement taking place. What people share will contribute to the Commission’s work, alongside further engagement and a Public Panel on Care.

Have your say

Whether you currently receive care, support someone who does, work in social care, or simply have thoughts about what the future of care should look like, your voice matters.

We encourage people to find out more about the Big Conversation and consider sharing their experiences and views.
