People across Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire are being invited to share their views on proposals for where specialist heart and vascular surgery services should be delivered in the future.
NHS Greater Manchester has launched two public consultations looking at how specialist cardiac and vascular surgery could be provided across the region. The consultations are open until 22 September 2026, giving patients, families, NHS staff and members of the public the opportunity to have their say before any decisions are made.
Under the proposals, all adult cardiac surgery would be provided at Wythenshawe Hospital, while specialist vascular surgery would be provided at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI).
While specialist surgery would be concentrated at these locations, outpatient appointments, diagnostic tests and follow-up care would continue to be delivered from a range of locations across Greater Manchester.
The consultations follow a review of specialist cardiac and vascular surgery services, which considered a number of factors, including growing demand for services, increasingly complex patient needs and workforce challenges.
Katherine Sheerin, Chief Commissioning Officer for NHS Greater Manchester, said it was important that local people had the opportunity to influence the future of these services.
“When someone needs specialist heart or vascular surgery, they are often facing one of the most serious health challenges of their life. Our responsibility is to make sure these services can continue to provide safe, high-quality care for generations to come.”
She added that thousands of people rely on these services each year and encouraged patients, families, staff and the wider public to take part.
“Every response will help make sure local views are fully considered before any decisions are taken.”
