Recruitment, Training and Inclusion

After you have expressed an interest we would arrange for you to have an informal chat with the volunteer coordinator, where we can clarify your interests and what you can get out of volunteering.

Should you wish to proceed we would invite you to a one-to-one induction where we will tell you more about the Healthwatch organisation and what we would expect from you as one of our volunteers. We can discuss any training needs you may wish to consider or any accessibility issues you may have. We would also have to organise two character references for you and please note some roles will require a DBS check. We would also ask you to familiarise yourself with our volunteer handbook and policies.

It’s an opportunity for you to ask us any questions and get a feel for Healthwatch! Here is an excerpt from a volunteer who has been through our induction process fairly recently…

“Initially I applied to be part of Healthwatch as an Engagement Volunteer and Healthwatch Ambassador. I felt it was a worthwhile cause as it impacts our local communities and aims to improve social care and health services in the area. I wanted to volunteer for an organisation that allows flexibility due to my commitments; for example child care and elderly parents, as well as wanting time to myself in retirement. After writing my application and finding references for my character, I went along to the Healthwatch Office to meet the Volunteer Co-ordinator, Lisa. I was welcomed into the office whilst waiting for her and was immediately made to feel welcome. The induction programme allowed me to become familiar with the statutory functions, aims and values of Healthwatch. Additionally, it introduced me to the different processes and methodologies they undertake. It was relaxed and informal. I left feeling inspired and ready to be involved with ‘pieces of work’ they were about to embark on. I was invited to attend a Safeguarding Presentation and Training session which I found very useful. I met other volunteers and Healthwatch staff.” –Excerpt written by Julie McCombes
